During the Winter break, 17 undergrads took BUS 353 Entrepreneurship online.  The class met 3 hours a day online and was taught by ShiftGroups Stefan Doering who designed the course and Gerrit Wolf, Director of the Innovation Center.  Students logged on from India, Korea, China and California as well as from home locally. Each student delivered a five minute pitch the final day for his or her business, which ranged from new security photo for a smart phone to a USB stick for movies.

In a journal article titled "Is Being a Jerk Necessary for Originality? Examining the Role of Disagreeableness in the Sharing and Utilization of Original Ideas," Lily Cushenbery of CoB at SBU and Samuel Hunter of Penn State University conducted studies of mock marketing campaigns and chat rooms to test how ideas are shared in a business setting.

Engineer Reed Philips, Chemist Stan Wong, Information Scientist David Ecker, and Bio Technologist Kasia Sawicka pitched their startups to MBAs in September. They attracted 20 MBAs who formed four teams  to consult the startups.

Professor Donna Tumminello's engineers teamed up with business students from Entrepreneurship Across Countries to write business plans for a startups as term projects in respective courses.   Engineers proposed six projects and the business students jumped on four of them.  Startups included Controller for Sprinkler Systems, App for Ride-Sharing to work, Electric Power Theft Monitor, and and Personal Health Monitor.  Engineers developed the technology and business students developed the business plan. Students learned the ups and downs of cross disciplinary teams and bringing  product to market.

On November 19 Associate Director of Economic Development Ann Marie Scheidt and serial entrepreneur Andrew Hazen announced the opening of Launchpad Stony Brook, the third LaunchPad on Long island.  It is located on the second floor on the Engineering Building.  Student startups can meet and receive mentoring in the LaunchPad. Contact Annmarie.scheidt@stonybrook.edu

Innovation Lab Open House
The Innovation Lab, 210 Harriman Hall, held an open house and demonstration of the maker space for the SBU community on Nov 5.  David Ecker from DOIT and his assistants brought the equipment and the room together.  The Lab will open next semester for use by individuals and a few classes focusing on product development.

Mentors Mix with Student Entrepreneurs
SBU student entrepreneurs kicked off Innovation Month on October 1 in the Innovation Center by exploring their startups with mentors.  The mentors, who are serial entrepreneurs with their bios described on the mentor page, were Marc Alessi, Amel Chaudhuri,  Burke Liburt, and Doug Whitcomb.  They were joined by student mentor Jake Schmigelski, alumnus mentor Peter Russy and high school student Erica Xerri, who took pictures below. Students were from CoB and Engineering.  There were a series of small group discussions between students and mentors.  Both found the informal meeting informative and exciting.  Plans are being made to do it again next month.

October is designated Innovation Month, announced Dean Manny London of the College of Business.  Each week will have at least one event on campus. Events include meetups with serial entrepreneurs Bill Drayton, Rich Gelfond, Paul Schwartz, and Jake Schmigelski who will talk about innovation programs offered to students.
